The Story of Success: What I learnt from “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell?

The core message: It is not an accident, luck or fate that some people become outstandingly successful.
Most of us would assume that success was a result of a person’s personality or attitude towards life. We believe that entrepreneurs are made through their capabilities to spot opportunities, and subsequently have the gut to take action on them.

However, Outliers attempts to look at success from different angles. The fact is, certain people are given opportunities that are just inaccessible to others. For instance, the school hockey team selection system is biased towards children born earlier in the year, simply because trials are conducted in the beginning of the year.

Where is the money in blogging?

If you are an avid reader of blogs, you’ll notice that it is possible to classify blog types into several genres.

First, you have the personal blogs, detailing personal experiences and which exist specifically for self-expression purposes. Their reader make-up primarily consists of friends, acquaintances and family.

While these bloggers do not intend to make money from blogging, some of them do incorporate some minimal form of advertising on their blogs such as Google Adsense.

How to use hype to quickly generate traffic to your site

One of the ways bloggers use to draw a huge amount of traffic to their blogs is to create a hyped-out post citing secrets to making money online (or some other topic of great interest) within a short span of time.

The catch here is to use an attention grabbing topic that shouts out an accomplishment that seems quite impossible to be true, or downright outrageous.

For instance, Learn How I’ve Made $7,500 Over The Last Two Months Soon by the University Kid garnered such a huge volume of interest that to-date over 99 comments were posted on this post.

What to do when your new site is not listed in top search engine results?

After running our keyword analysis and building our search engine optimized blog or website, our aim would obviously be to get our site listed on the first page of search engine results.

Doing this seems pretty easy for low competition keywords. How to identify niche items to sell online explains how you can identify niche keywords to optimize.

Also, while I’ve realized that Google seems to give precedence to listing Blogspot sites in search results, they recently seem to require sites to be active for a certain amount of time before allowing them to appear in top search engine results.

Now, if this happens, there are several things you can do. First, you could leave the blog or website you have built alone for a while and look into it later when it has matured.

In the meantime, you could also continue building incoming and outgoing links to raise the ranking of the site. You could also continue publishing content with optimized keywords, and do the usual social bookmarking work.

What I’ve discovered recently is that Google seems to place a greater importance on certain article submission sites such as www.ezinearticles.com. In fact, if you write an optimized article and submit it to www.ezinearticles.com, Google tends to place that article in a top search engine ranking earlier than your new blog or site.

I’ve tried other article submission sites such as www.goarticles.com or www.articlesbase.com, but they don’t seem to list as well as Ezine articles.

This means that you can use article submission sites as an alternative way to lead visitors to your site. Perhaps you could produce several optimized articles in different variations, and thus build more incoming links to your new website.

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get new sites or blogs listed faster?

Personal conviction and perseverance

Contrary to popular belief, being successful online does not happen overnight. Lots of hard work has to be put into your business, and you’ll need to contend with low or even no income for a period of time before your internet business actually takes off.

The good news is, if you are starting your internet business part-time, you don’t really need the additional income urgently. Thus, you are able to wait it out for some time before your business generates profits.

Blogging for dollars - Why some bloggers succeed?

Feeling a little dry on blog ideas, I was scouring through the internet for inspiration when several blog posts jumped out at me. We have Yaro Starak’s Entrepreneur’s Journey feature podcast – How much traffic should a New Blog have after 2 months? – advocating the importance of personal interest in a blog topic.

Obviously with Mitch, he has no problems consistently being frankly in-depth in his reports. On top of that, his past experiences in writing about college football help in crafting his current blog posts. He is able to relate history to current scenarios and thus provide a valued opinion. In addition, he would also have the necessary networks to feed him the latest information probably before it becomes widespread news.

How can you “Write to Sell”?

Aren’t you just tired of reading persuasive sales copies that are especially crafted to get you to reach into your wallet?

Are you filled with skepticism when these websites guarantee “fail-proof” methods or “easy” profits?

Do you feel that you’ve just been scammed when you discover that the “secret” in the manuals you buy don’t really work?

The truth is, utterly persuasive content has lost credibility in the matured Internet market today. Most of us no longer are easily persuaded by reading typical sales copies that exaggerate the value of an online product. In fact, our past encounters of repeated disappointments with these products only make us yearn more for something legitimate.

With viral marketing and social media marketing concepts becoming more apparent, most of us make our decisions based on the opinion of others. Thus, an online product that is legitimately beneficial and credible would likely gain wide acceptance and even recommendations amongst the online community. People are attracted to products that are unique, and are willing to share information that they find amusing, shocking or beyond the norm.

Now, the question is – How are you able to create buzz with web content writing that are beneficial, unique and genuine?

I came across an article by Dosh Dosh – How to say nothing in 500 words – a brilliant article which explores several ways to write compelling and superior content. Holistically, I feel that these pointers all point to the same thing – making your style and content different from others.

Ideally, we should be able to adapt these points to a sales letter or a sales page. Let’s explore:

Don’t write the obvious
– If you are selling an information product, think about unique or different your product is from other. Phrases like “surefire way to make money”, “guaranteed returns”, or “my secret method”, have been overused. Instead, tell your personal success story sincerely, explain how you came up with the system and all the hard work you’ve put in.

Use points others like to avoid – No one dares admit the true reality of their business model. Contrary to what they tell you, making money online is not a minimal-effort venture. It really isn’t about buying an online product and setting the system on auto pilot mode for instant cash pouring into your bank account. Explaining this and being sincere on the amount of work needed before success materializes helps set expectations for your potential customers.

Engage with the audience – Use words to speak into the situation of your readers. Appeal to them emotionally, or get them to feel the need for your product. If you online product helps your customer to solve a problem, communicating that clearly will increase your chances for sales copy that convert prospects to customers.

Be specific – Don’t be vague with your points. Support your claims with legitimate statistics or numbers. Use specific examples to illustrate your points. E.g. I worked on Search Engine Optimization and traffic generation techniques such as blog commenting, directory listing and e-zine marketing for one year before I finally earned my first dollar online.

Get straight to the point – There is no point beating around the bush with sentences that seem to go nowhere. Don’t confuse this with explaining the background of a situation though. However, rambling on about something without getting to the point, makes your content a tiresome read.

Use expressions wisely – Phrases like “In my humble opinion”, or “As a matter of fact”, when overused would serve more harm then good. Pick your words selectively, and only use them whenever appropriate.

Colorful, colorless and colored words – Your writing style has an effect on your readers’ perception of you. Balance the use of colorful and creative phrases, such as “I attained monetary success through my sheer dedication of time and effort”. Try not to overuse certain general words such as “nice”, “cool” or “great” or else you may end up stale.

Finally, the power of the word is genuinely an important factor in making it online. Only with great writing style will the strength of the content stand out above the crowd. Writing web content is not rocket science, but it does take creative flair to produce content with the capability to capture the hearts and minds of the audience.
