Why Google Adwords did not work for me?
In my quest to find a product to sell on the Internet, I also became attracted to the idea of utilizing Google Adwords as a way to advertise products on Clickbank.
Just like any other aspiring internet marketer, I signed up for Google Adwords and started advertising several products I found on Clickbank. The first product I promoted was a book marketing product. I would say that I was shooting in the dark at this point.
While Google Adwords was easy to use, easy to sign-up for and easy to set up, it is also easy to burn money with Google Adwords if you don’t know what you are doing. As the book marketing product didn’t sell, and there were not many clicks on my ads to begin with, I decided to promote products from other categories. I found 2 products to promote - 1) Signing for Babies 2) Cure Morning Sickness.
Again, I was unsuccessful. After spending about US$50 on Google Adwords, I started thinking - What did I do that was not right? I spent countless of hours researching through blogs and found several resources that were really useful.
One thing I noticed was that my cost per click was high due to the low quality score I had. Even with a high per cost click, my ad rank was low, and did not appear enough times for the keywords I wanted. After searching for answers on the internet, this article caught my eye - 10 ways to increase your Adwords Quality Score, by Red Fly Marketing.
Basically, my Quality Score was low due to several reasons:
1) The landing page was of poor quality in the eyes of Google. While the keywords I wanted to use on my ad was optimized, the landing page did not meet the Google’s standards. Therefore, Google viewed my ad as not relevant to the landing page.
2) I had used too many words in my Ad Group. This diluted my ad’s focus. In this case, Google did not view my ads highly as not all the keywords used corresponded to the ad.
3) Another affiliate was advertising the same landing page, with the same keywords. Google do not display ads that point to the same URL, and only the one with the higher bid value will appear.
Most importantly, I learnt that using Google’s Adwords for advertising required a systematic strategy. This was due to the fact that Google’s sophisticated system and the competitive market had resulted in the need for step-by-step tactics to be used. Otherwise, we would just be wasting our money on clicks that do not convert.
With this, I researched further on these techniques and came across the Adwords System Exposed resources by Mindvalley. I shall write a review on the The Adwords Winner’s Playbook in my next post.
